August 2025 Edition:
From Sunshine to School Days: Caring for Your Mental Health as Summer Ends

Every year, without fail, it always seems like the end of summer sneaks up on us. One minute we’re at backyard cookouts, taking a dip in the pool, or catching lightning bugs; the next, the stores are full of back-to-school specials and pumpkin spice lattes are on every menu. For those of us looking for a reprieve from the summer heat this is a welcome shift, but for others, what lingers is an air of bittersweet regret as we say goodbye to extended sunshine for shorter days and cooler nights.
For those who love to bask in the glow of summer, this time of year can feel almost magical—taking in the summer breeze on the porch, family reunions, and maybe even a little extra time for R&R. But, like clockwork, when the shift to fall occurs, sometimes new and even uncomfortable emotions closely follow. It’s perfectly normal to feel a mix of emotions: a little sadness, a little excitement, maybe even some anxiety in anticipation for the busier months ahead. Soon, school yards will be filled once again with the familiar sound of gleeful children as summer vacation comes to an end. Not to mention, shore traffic and most family road trips will be a distant memory.
Why the Season Change Feels Different
The move from summer to fall isn’t just about weather—it’s about returning to business as usual, setting a steady pace, and preparing for colder days ahead. We might not always realize it, but shorter days can also wreak havoc on our mood more than we know. It can show up in any number of ways —feeling a little more sluggish or less motivated, and a subtle sense of uneasiness as the thrill of having fun in the sun wanes. If you’ve ever noticed yourself feeling “off” once the days get shorter, it’s not just in your head—your body and mind are adjusting. You’re not overreacting and you’re certainly not alone!
Check In With Yourself
Before you dive headfirst into your fall schedule, give yourself permission to pause and check in. It might be helpful to ask yourself:
What did I enjoy most this summer?
What am I most grateful for from this summer?
What am I genuinely looking forward to this fall?
Where might I need to slow down or add more rest?
You can jot these down in a journal, talk about them with a friend, or even share them the next time you gather around the dinner table. Reflection keeps you grounded.

Practical Ways to Ease the Transition
Keep some summer in your life. Just because the calendar might soon read “September”, doesn’t mean you have to give up evening walks, weekend park visits, or enjoying a fall festival.
Adjust routines gradually. If you or the kids have to wake up earlier, start to gradually shift bedtime and wake-up times so your new [earlier] schedule won’t be such a shock to your system.
Feed your body well. As schedules get busier, it’s easy to skip balanced meals. Don’t skimp out on nourishing food—it fuels your mood.
Get your sunlight. Even 10–15 minutes outside in the morning can help keep your energy levels steady.

Reframe Fall as a Fresh Start
Instead of seeing summer’s end as a loss, think of it as a second chance. Though your year is more than halfway through, it is the perfect time for a reset. Fall can be a perfect season to re-assess your goals from the vision board you so carefully curated at the top of the year. Celebrate any wins or accomplishments and determine if you want to pivot, focusing your attention in another direction. It’s also a good time to start something new—a book club, a home project, a workout plan, or even a new family tradition like spending your Saturday nights around the fire pit. This mindset shift can help you look forward to what’s ahead instead of only missing what’s passed.
Stay Connected
In our community, connection is everything. Make it a point to check in with friends, join a church or community group activity, or schedule monthly dinners with loved ones. Social connection is one of the strongest protectors of mental health, especially during seasonal changes. There is no cliché to the saying, “We are better together”.
