Getting Still: How the nervous system works and how to regulate it!

In today’s fast-paced world, there is a lot of conversation surrounding nervous system regulation and the importance of tapping into stillness and mindfulness. But what does it actually mean to regulate our internal state? In this blog, we’ll explore how the nervous system functions, why regulation is essential for overall well-being, and practical ways to cultivate calm.
What is the Nervous System?
The nervous system acts as our body’s internal communication network. It continuously scans our environment to assess safety versus threat, helping regulate our thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations, and physical reactions. Our bodies are remarkably adaptive and designed to protect us.

Two main branches of the autonomic nervous system play a pivotal role in how we experience daily life:
The Sympathetic Nervous System: Responsible for the fight, flight, freeze, or fawn responses. When perceived danger arises, it increases heart rate, heightens alertness, and narrows focus, shifting the brain into survival mode.
The Parasympathetic Nervous System: Signals safety, allowing the body to rest, digest, recover, and conserve energy. This state engages the prefrontal cortex, the center for logic, discernment, and reason. This enables us to feel connected, present, and receptive. The vagus nerve serves as a primary highway for this system.
Why Nervous System Regulation Matters
When stuck in a chronic sympathetic state, receiving comfort, trusting others, and staying grounded becomes difficult. For many, environmental triggers like sudden sounds, sensory overload, or emotional stress keep the body in a perpetual state of hyper-arousal. Over time, living in constant fight-or-flight can lead to chronic fatigue, anxiety, burnout, and physical tension, making it challenging to experience peace, joy, and meaningful connection.
Conversely, when our nervous system returns to baseline and rests, we gain clarity, emotional resilience, and a deeper connection to ourselves and those around us. Life becomes more exciting and we can finally experience JOY and SAFETY again!
As a therapist, I am often asked: “How do I feel safe in my body again?” While healing is a multi-layered journey, a gentle starting point is learning how to guide your body from sympathetic arousal to parasympathetic ease. My previous post, Triggers Are Invitations, Not Enemies: Understand How Your Nervous System Works and Find Your Way Back to Safety, delves deeper into understanding these internal shifts.
Practical Ways to Ground Your Nervous System
Regulating your nervous system doesn't require overwhelming effort. Simple, intentional somatic and mindfulness practices can help signal safety to your body:
Movement & Somatic Release: Mindful walking, gentle stretching, dancing, or shaking out tension in your arms and legs.
Breath & Relaxation: Deep abdominal breathing and progressive muscle relaxation to release physical tightness.
Emotional Expression: Allowing yourself to cry, journaling feelings, or engaging in creative art and music.
Mindfulness & Connection: Prayer, meditation, or speaking openly with a trusted friend or therapist.
