Why Your Body Remembers Trauma Even When Your Mind Doesn't

What is a Memory?
A lot of us would think of a memory as an event we can visualize in our minds or talk about concretely. But, what about when a certain smell gives you that same feeling you had when you were a child playing on the playground or a phone alarm gives you that same jolting feeling you get when you’re waking up for the day? There may not be a specific memory you can visualize in your head of playing on the playground or waking up in the morning, but your body is bringing you back to those moments. This is because our bodies often store memories even when our minds forget.
Those memories that we can visualize in our minds and talk about specific details of are called explicit memories - memories we can intentionally bring to mind. An implicit memory is a memory that our bodies remember subconsciously or automatically. In many circumstances, implicit memories can be positive. Like the example of a smell making you feel like you’re back to playing on the playground as a child, these memories can elicit feelings of nostalgia, happiness, or peace.
Traumatic experiences can be different. Many times, our bodies remember trauma or stressful events implicitly. If you’ve ever suddenly become overwhelmed with anxiety or felt panicked out of nowhere, you’re not broken; your body is remembering.
In a traumatic experience, the brain's primary goal shifts from creating a detailed story of what happened to survival. Instead of carefully organizing memories, your brain may prioritize rapid responses like fighting, fleeing, freezing, or fawning.
As a result, traumatic experiences may be remembered through physical sensations, emotions, smells, sounds, images, or automatic survival responses
This doesn't mean the trauma is literally "stored" in your muscles or tissues. Instead, it means your brain and nervous system have learned patterns of responding that once helped keep you alive.
Your Brain's Built-In Alarm System
Several parts of the brain work together during stressful experiences. Working together in your brain, you have you amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex. Your amygdala acts like an alarm system. It scans for potential danger and prepares your body to respond quickly. Your hippocampus helps organize memories by placing events into context (the ‘who’ ‘what’ ‘when’ and ‘where’). Your prefrontal cortex helps with reasoning, decision-making, and reminding us when we're actually safe. Together, these parts work as an alarm system for your body.
When your body and mind exceed the amount of stress they are capable of handling during a traumatic event, this system gets disrupted. The alarm system becomes highly sensitive, and the brain's ability to fully process and organize memories becomes more difficult.
Later, something that resembles the original danger, such as a smell, a tone of voice, a crowded room, or even a particular facial expression, can activate that alarm system again. Your body reacts before your thinking brain has a chance to say: "Wait...I'm actually safe." Experiences like this make sense from a nervous system perspective. While it can be frustrating and scary, it’s important to remember that your body isn't trying to sabotage you. It's trying to protect you.
Your nervous system learned that certain cues predicted danger. Even years later, it may continue responding automatically until it has opportunities to learn that those cues are no longer threats.
Healing is Possible
In order to heal, we need to teach our nervous system that we are safe in the present moment.
This often includes developing greater awareness of your body's signals, building emotional regulation skills, strengthening supportive relationships, and processing traumatic experiences with a qualified therapist.
For some people, approaches such as somatic therapies, EMDR, or parts work, or can support this healing process. The best approach depends on each person's history, symptoms, and goals.
Over time, your brain and nervous system can form new patterns. Just as they learned to respond to danger, they can also learn that safety is possible. The beautiful part is that our brains remain capable of change throughout life. With support, compassion, and the right therapeutic tools, your nervous system can gradually learn that it no longer has to stay in survival mode.
You are not broken. You are adapting. And healing is possible.
